TANJONG PAGAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Countless Possibilities for an Active Lifestyle by the Water
Greater Southern Waterfront
An area known as the Greater Southern Waterfront, which currently houses the Pasir Panjang and City Terminals, will be cleared for redevelopment within the next 10 to 15 years. The emptied land, which spans up to 1000 hectares (thrice the size of Marina Bay), is adjacent to many existing popular districts such as Harbourfront, Labrador and the Marina Central area. Tanjong Pagar, is one of the main districts that will be impacted with the relocation of the terminals.
In the 2014 Masterplan of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore, numerous ideas have been imagined for the Greater Southern Waterfront. Although they have not been entirely solidified, one thing is for certain: the rejuvenation that the Tanjong Pagar district will undergo will impact its residents positively, in terms of lifestyle and economic value. This includes residents of Wallich Residence and those staying or working around Tanjong Pagar Centre.
Six broad ideas were envisioned by Urban Planning Strategists (Urban Strategies Inc. and AECOM Singapore Pte. Ltd.).
Idea 1: New Opportunities to Live, Work and Play
Due to the sheer size of the Greater Southern Waterfront, the freed up land can be segmented into different waterfront districts that have their own distinct traits.
Idea 2: Extend the City to Greater Southern Waterfront
The redeveloped land could be its own city as a whole, the bridge between the CBD and the surrounding housing and businesses not part of the city. It would open up more opportunities for housing, commercial and entertainment amenities.
Idea 3: Expand the Network of Public Places
Marina Bay’s Central Linear Park can be linked up with the Greater Southern Waterfront expand the public spaces for citizens to take a walk on a non-motorised transport zone only for pedestrians.
Idea 4: Capitalise on Our Blue Assets
Other than helping Singapore store our precious water supply, a new reservoir could be created around the Tanjong Pagar area, opening up possibilities to enjoyable recreational water activities.
Idea 5: Create a Continuous Waterfront
As many attractions line the Greater Southern Waterfront, a 30 km long route for avid joggers or cyclists could be created, with picturesque stops at districts like Harbourfront and Gardens by the Bay.
Idea 6: Connect Green and Open Spaces
An eco-corridor, a linkway flourishing with flora and fauna could connect greenspaces like Labrador Park, Mount Faber, Gardens by the Bay and many more. The lush greenery would be the perfect public space for many to relax and hold events.
As one can tell, the Greater Southern Waterfront is teeming with possibilities and residents in Tanjong Pagar can really reap benefits that new changes the in the years to come.
